American Motors – marlboro miles
Ont thing ahead. There is no chorus. “marlboro miles” runs on reverb and a hit-then-pause groove, the drums landing hard and then dropping out so the guitar can fill the gap with murk. Dustin White built it around a thrift-store photo he lost years ago: a woman in bed surrounded by cigarette reward coupons. The first verse swerves to a sci-fi convention in Columbus, Ohio, where the band used to party every year, and the two images sit together better than they should. Both are about stuff people hoard to show who they are, and both end up in a box somewhere.
It’s the second single from “Functional Music”, out November 6 on Expert Work Records, after No Horses (W37). That one was about change that only swaps one problem for another, this one is about rewards that were never worth the miles. Waiting for the album now.
